National Youth Education Program

To reduce the increasing rate of youth HIV infections, The NAMES Project works with schools and community-based agencies to organize displays of The Quilt and deliver tailored HIV prevention curriculums that effect change in risk-taking behaviors among youth. The program particularly targets youth of color, young women, and GLBT youth in under-served urban and rural communities.

This HIV prevention education program offers youth the opportunity to display up to 32 panels of The Quilt (4 blocks). The display works in coordination with peer education efforts and an approved HIV/AIDS curriculum. Through the support of the local community and The NAMES Project, our nation’s teens who are most at risk for HIV infection are afforded the opportunity to experience The Quilt and to assess their own risk-taking behaviors and lack of AIDS awareness.

The High School and Middle School Display Program goals are:

  1. To effect positive change in the knowledge and risk-taking behaviors of youth through harm reduction education;
  2. To effect positive change in the attitudes of youth by humanizing the epidemic;
  3. To develop youth leadership opportunities in the delivery of HIV prevention education; and,
  4. To facilitate healthy decision-making among youth through informed, sustained dialogue on HIV/AIDS issues.

The Quilt is an effective Educational Tool:

  • More than 8 out of 10 students say that seeing The Quilt makes them want to find out more about how to prevent HIV infection.
  • 9 out of 10 students say seeing The Quilt made AIDS more real for them
  • 6 out of 10 students talked with their parents after seeing The Quilt
  • 9 out of 10 teachers say The Quilt enhanced their ability to teach about HIV and AIDS.

Young people are the fastest growing group in the United States to be infected with HIV. As many as 25% of the estimated 40,000 new HIV infections in the U.S. each year occur in 13- to 21-year-olds. The Quilt offers a unique way to reach them with the message of HIV prevention.

The Quilt starts a dialogue about AIDS:

"Those who have seen the AIDS Memorial Quilt know its power. It is an ideal venue for beginning a dialogue that can be difficult to start. It opens discussion between peers, educators and students, parents and children and the community as a whole."
-Jim Williams, Past Executive Director
National Education Association

The visual and emotional impact of the Quilt gets young people, teachers and parents talking about AIDS. It provides a unique opportunity to bring up the subject of HIV prevention.

The Quilt strengthens HIV prevention programs:

"The Quilt is probably the most effective tool to bring our HIV and AIDS awareness. The students can look at it and go from not talking about it to saying, 'Wow, I should be more aware of HIV and AIDS'."
-Mark Cornfield, teacher, Danville, CA

A school Quilt display brings together the entire school community, uniting people and building school-wide support for a variety of HIV prevention activities. Panels made for young people remind students that HIV can affect their lives, motivating them to think about their own risk of infection.
